so under the weather

The weather here up north has been crazy. It can be as hot as Penang on one day (well, maybe slightly cooler = 24C) and then drops to a good 12C the day after.

That’s how I got under the weather. My nose is still stuffed up which makes it harder to breathe.

…and for the first time, although today is a Friday, I am NOT KEEN at all. :| The weekend? Perhaps I’ll go buy some stuff, spend some money and that’s pretty much it. Besides, I’m sure Shanghai would be packed with humans; F1 racing over the weekend. :|

Oh, and yesterday, I had this sudden craving for Laksa, Nasi Lemak, and Roti Canai (despite the whole deal with the gastric pain the entire day).

Pick up is at 8.15am today; gave me some time to write this post.

*aaaachoooooo*. Sheesh.

I WANT TO GO HOME! *wail* *sob*

1 more stupid idiotic week of crap.

my weekend in HongKong

It has been a crazy crappy week. Traveling to HongKong for the weekend would really take my mind off stuff. Besides, I’m really excited about taking some lomography pictures of HongKong. :)

I was lucky to be able to see some really cool stuff during this trip. First up, an art exhibition at Times Square titled Chocolate Rain. Cool mushroom huts were set up to exhibit the craft work.

cr1

It is about making artsy stuff out of old sentimental things of your own. It is very much like the patch work we do in school. Check out some of the stuff made.

cr2

Cloth is the main material for this patch work and I must say, the result appear to be rather impressive.

I found the dog, blue from the Nickelodean TV show, Blue’s Clues at the exhibition. Cute!

bluesclues

Another exhibition would be a Toy exhibition in the shopping mall in TaiKoo just opposite the apartment where my aunt stays. Lots of Japanese toys were being displayed. I even got one of their T-shirts for only HKD20.

toy1

Ultraman is pretty much the center of attention of the whole exhibition. I didn’t get to take a pic of the big one though (too many ppl taking pics). There were really old toys being displayed as well. I didn’t know Betty Boop is almost 80 years old!

toy2

In search of good food is of coz one of the piorities when visiting HongKong. On top of my usual intake of Vietnamese food (Perfume River) at Causeway Bay, chicken pie, egg tart and milk tea at Wan Chai and dimsum at Hei Cao Rou at Times Square, I did try a couple of new stuff this time.

scoop

Instead of having my usual mango desert, aunt and uncle thought it would be nice to try this; stir fry ice-cream — Scoop. You get to pick the flavor of your ice cream, 3 toppings and the ‘chef’ will stir-fry your ice-cream for you. This stir-fry activity is being done on an ice block. Result: ice-cream turned out to be pretty soft after much frying (it was suppose to be hard). Nothing special for a HKD40 ice-cream (double scoop).

pizza-express

Before I left HongKong, aunt brought me to the supposedly “best pizza in town”. The restaurant, Pizza Express is located 3 blocks away from where my aunt stayed. I must admit, it sure is the best pizza in town. Love the artichoke pizza. Pasta was great as well. Not all that cheap, but worth the price.

HongKong has never failed to amaze me. Thanks auntie Dianne and uncle Chris for providing such good hospitability every time; including this time.

hk

Btw, love this little lion my uncle put at the window in their living hall. There are 2 of them. Looked as though they are guarding the house from the window. Way cute. :P

lion

Took some lomo pics. Can’t wait to develop them when I get home. Speaking of which, I saw some really cool Diana F+ accessories at C!tyPlaza; wide angel lense, fish eye lense, spliter etc. I didn’t buy, though it sure was tempting.

Anyway, 2 more weeks. Flying off to Shanghai tomorrow.

days = months

mac

It has only been my 4th day here in China and it felt like 4 months. I have a million more days to survive before I actually go home. Work has been tough — really tough. The obstacles have been really high and this is only the first site. This is really bad.

Thank God I have my mac with me; turning on and using it every night makes me feel less attached to my work — even though if it’s using it for only a good 2 hours.

I’m dreading for tomorrow to come coz I know that it will be a long day. L.O.N.G. We’ll be lucky to get out of the site by 8pm. I am still looking forward to Saturday though. Taking lomo pictures will take my mind off stuff. It’ll be fun taking pics in Hong Kong. I hope my films would be sufficient.

p/s: I wonder how’s my Ricoh 500 RF doing. :|

emotional impact

Have you had this feeling where you reach this known yet unfamiliar place, and the moment you sit down to rest in your tiny hotel room, you just want to pack up and go home almost instantly?

That’s exactly how I feel right now. And I’ve only been here for a good 7 hours (minus travel time).

~480 more hours more.

I apologize for such negative vibe.

.sad.

passport

It is now 12.35am. Leaving in exactly 7 hours. Physically, I’m ready to go. Mentally, I’m not. Don’t plan to sleep. Fear of getting sick on the plane again. Praying for the best.

I hope Loco Roco 2 will entertain me when I’m on the plane. Maybe Patapon 2 may help. Not forgetting my book and iPod of coz. They are suppose to ease my loneliness.

.

.

Yet, I’m not prepared mentally. I don’t want to go. 20 freaking 1 days. 3 freaking weeks. Blahhh…

:(

New Toy – Ricoh 500 RF

I’ve got a new toy to play with — a Ricoh 500 RF.

ricoh2

It’s practically new, though it has reached the age of 29 years this year. My aunt bought this from S’pore in 1980 and has used it for no more than 5 times (apparently, she couldn’t understand the settings and all the pictures taken turned out to be really blur). Mum mentioned to her about me being into lomo and old camera stuff. My aunt went to dig out this camera and hand it to me today. I was most excited. I have a feeling it is still functioning. A little fixing is most definitely needed though.

ricoh1

The specifications of this Ricoh 500RF are as follow:

  • Lens: 40mm Color Rikenon f2.8 lens, 3 groups, 4 elements
  • Shutter: Mechanical shutter, Speeds B 1/8, 1/15, 1/30, 1/60, 1/125, 1/250 and 1/500
  • Exposure Meter: CdS exposure meter, fully automatic control and manual override, ASA25-800 (DIN 15-30), EV6-17 (ASA100/DIN21), One 1.3V mercury battery (JIS H-C, Mallory PX675, Eveready EPX 675 or equivalent).
  • Viewfinder: Bright frame viewfinder with parallax correction mark, superimposition rangefinder patch, f-stop scale, exposure meter needle, over and underexposure zones, Magnification 0.49X, Coverage of actual picture area 85%.
  • Film Loading: Multi-slip easy loading
  • Film Advance: Single stroke film advance lever, Automatic winding possible by mounting Ricoh SP winder
  • Film Rewind: Easy-to-operate crank lever
  • Film Counter: Additive, automatic resetting
  • Flash Synchronization: Hot shoe (Cordless direct-contact accessory shoe)
  • Self-timer: Built-in
  • Filter Size: 46mm screw-in type
  • Dimensions: 111 mm (width) x 71 mm (height) x 55 mm (depth)
  • Weight: 380g

I need to get it fixed first. I’ve asked someone to help. I think this camera needs to be cleared on the inside of the film loading section (which is filled with I don’t know what), to check if the focus and all is working fine and finally, to get the 29-year-old mercury battery out from the camera (I couldn’t get it out and my aunt didn’t even realized a battery was needed).

I was browsing through the web earlier today and this person mentioned that it’s worth the time and effort to get this camera fixed. It will be of good use. So, I’m determined to get it fixed. I’ve even went to search on flickr and found a couple of black and white photos, taken using this camera. Looks pretty cool to be honest. I’m still looking for more.

I won’t be able to play with it until I come back at the end of the month. I hope it can be fixed. I can’t wait for it to be fixed. I have a good feeling about this camera being fixed. *woot woot*.

Btw, if anyone reads this and know anything about this camera, do drop me a note. Thanks.

saving Earth in the most ridiculous way

I am sure we are all aware of the fact that the Earth is regenerating resources at a rate which is not fast enough to sustain the current human lifestyle. We are literally killing ourselves at this very moment. I know that many of us are trying their very best to save mother Earth — recycling, saving energy, using environmental friendly products, etc. However, some of us have actually gone overboard, coming out with rather ridiculous way of saving mother Earth. At least it’s ridiculous from how I see it.

Here’s the story. I was driving to work one day listening to hitz.fm and it was days before Earth Hour. Hence, a lot of topics were somewhat related to saving the Earth and environment. The DJs were talking about a lady who refuses to travel by plane, simply coz she didn’t want to contribute to the amount of carbon that has been emitted into Earth. She was suppose to fly to Australia from England to attend her friend’s wedding. Now, because she refuses to travel by plane, she started her journey approximately 3 months before the day of her friend’s wedding. Yes, 3 months. She traveled, generally by sea and land — cars, horses, ship I suppose (I don’t quite remember) and the list pretty much goes on. Apparently, this was supposed to save on carbon emission, hence saving on global warming.

Now, let us use the carbon footprint calculator. Total amount of carbon emission contributed by one person, flying from England to Australia and back would amount up to approximately 3 tonnes. Spending 3 months on the road, staying in places and using up a certain amount of electricity, MAY just caused the same amount of CO2 being emitted into Earth. Who knows, it could have been more. I may be wrong, but I just felt that this method is ridiculous simply because you are throwing away 3 months trying to save Earth, when you could have been causing more damage! In fact, one can use 3 months to do wonders, including things that could save Earth. 3 tonnes of CO2 is a lot. I’m not denying that fact. But couldn’t there be a more efficient way of saving Earth rather than spending 3 months of our time traveling by feet?

Yes, our lifestyle has changed. It is an evolution in the humankind. There is no way we can go back to living in the ancient world where we hunt for our own food and cook them under a fire we built by rubbing two stones together. Yes, the evolution has caused us humans to consume resources from the Earth at a rate that is way too fast for the Earth to regenerate. But spending 3 months trying to get to another place does not seem to be efficient in terms of energy consumed either. I think it’s just someone trying to clear his or her conscious by traveling by land or sea. Coz it doesn’t make any much sense at all.

Let’s look from the perspective of what I’ll do on Monday. I’ll be flying from Penang to HongKong for business and me alone would have caused approximately 0.6 tonnes of CO2 to be emitted into Earth. If traveling by land and sea will really save Earth, would that mean that I have to start my journey a month earlier and waste a month of time, not being able to do work efficiently? I just don’t see the point — at all. In addition to all of that, has anyone actually thought of how much money would be needed to travel that way? Is it really cheaper? Think about the amount of time needed. Really, is it any cheaper? Not everyone has that luxury of spending that sort of money to save Earth. It’s the same as those who can afford fuel efficient cars and start to criticize ppl who aren’t using fuel efficient cars. Not everyone is able to afford that.

Why not we start out the thought of saving Earth by thinking about how we can save the amount of household or work electricity that we may have wasted daily. Hmm? Or why not we start by effectively doing recycling activities, starting from home. Hmm? Wouldn’t that seemed a little wiser?

I’m all against global warming. I know global warming is killing us. But even though we are trying to save Earth, I still believe we should do it wisely and efficiently. I don’t believe that going back to living like a caveman would help — seriously.

Then again, this are just my thoughts. You are free to disagree.
