It upsets me when I see friends forgetting their roots after achieving something great. It upsets me even more when those said-to-be-great-achievements aren’t all that great after all and these friends of mine aren’t realizing it. They forget where they come from or who they once were before those achievements are attained. They are so blinded by the status, the power and the money that they lose their own identity — that identity that once made them a great friend and a great person with great personality.
I bet most of us have our own ways of defining successes in our lives. We set our own goals and we execute our own plans to achieve what we wish to achieve. Some of us may still be working hard on executing that plan, while others may have been satisfied with their successes. For some people who have attained such success attained something else along the way. That something else is arrogance.
Arrogance brings you nowhere. Arrogance only slows you down and before you know it, you’ll be left behind by none other than yourself. Keep up with that cockiness and you’ll lose it all. If you think you’re good, there’s bound to be someone better than you. Hence, I’m not getting the whole deal about being arrogant and thinking that you’re the best. Confidence, yes you must have. But arrogance? Why bother adopting that behavior?
It pays to be modest. It pays to remember where you come from, where your roots are. Without your roots, there is a high chance you won’t succeed and be where you are today. A lot of us forgets that along the way. We are so overjoyed by our successes to a point where we cannot see those roots anymore simply because we allow ourselves to float up to Cloud 9. We then start to think highly of ourselves, thinking of how great we are, looking down at people from Cloud 9, turning what was once called confidence into arrogance.
To me, it is important to constantly keep track of where I am. Whenever I know that there could be a chance for me to venture into Cloud 9, I’ll make sure I anchor myself down to my roots. That way, I can assure myself that I’m always grounded. The last thing I need is to adopt that arrogant behavior so I’m trying real hard to keep myself grounded and to be who I really am.
Be humble. It’s a note I make to myself every now and then. And always, always remember your roots, coz if you don’t, one day, when you float out of Cloud 9, you’ll be as lost as ever and no one will be able to help you (even if they are willing to).

Putting the freak into economics have created a wondrous phenomenon in the study of economics. Adding a super into the whole phenomenon — one hell of a book.
I’ve always had a thing for economics. It is by far one of the best subjects that explains the rationale behind the behaviors of most humans and that most humans are responsive to incentives. This book covers the fundamental theories of economics; how demand & supply plays a role in doing businesses, how negative externalities impacts the way humans behave (responsiveness to incentives), how humans are genuinely selfish when it comes to the impact on their personal interests, etc.
The best part to this book is how the writers have incorporated all the fundamental theories into their analysis on topics such as street prostitution, suicide bombers, global warming, altruism, and many more; like how street prostitution is not too good of a business to venture into or how there is really no altruism within us humans. The analysis is absolutely brilliant. In fact, some are rather hilarious.
I love Freakonomics. I love SuperFreakonomics even more. Definitely a good book to read if you are a fan of economics or crazy but logic analysis on issues.
So, the first month of the year has passed. Too fast. A little way too fast. I gave a lot of thought to the happenings in January and came up with this totally randomized post.
I’m hoping that February would be better. Have a good first day of the month.
