I love Barney Stinson and his Suit Up! phrase. He used it so often in How I Met Your Mother that I think as of today, it has truly become legendary.
To be honest, there’s nothing wrong with suiting up. Perhaps in the series, his interpretation of suiting up is to dress in suits, like how he dress up everyday for work. But suit up simply means putting on clothes that is suitable for a designated activity, be it for work, for sports, for a dinner date or for bed. There is a certain range of clothing that is suitable for each activity.
However, it is sad to know that some individuals are still very lost in the context of dressing up. To be honest, how you dress simply defines how much respect you have for yourself, as well as the activity you are attending. It will also set a first impression for new people you are about to meet. Is it important? Hell yea it is! First impressions are one of those things that you want to get it right on the first try. It actually takes a long time to shake off the first impression you have on someone. Humans shouldn’t judge you say? Well, live with the fact that all humans judge to a certain extend. Hence, making a first impression becomes very substantial.
I’m always amaze by how some people can actually put on a sloppy oversized T-shirt with a pair of super worn out pants and get to work. It’s okie to wear T-shirt sometimes, but at least make an effort to tuck in to make yourself look neat. I’ve also seen some girls who comes to work in super tight mini dresses, or super low cut revealing blouses. Come on girls, I’m sure you know that you’re here to work and not to party, right? At one point, many of the girls in one of our office in Asia were turning up to work in mini skirts and singlets to a point it got so out of hand that other people from other companies who sits in the same building said that employees from our company dress up like whores. It wasn’t a very nice description but there’s no one to blame but themselves, no?
I’m not a vain pot. Don’t get me wrong. Nonetheless, I feel it is important to dress to suit the occasion. There’s an attire that is suitable for every activity. Images are important. Hence, it is up to you to choose if you want to dress like a million bucks, or to dress like a sloppy-average-joe-I-don’t-give-a-damn-about-anything. And when you cannot even give a damn about dressing nicely, don’t expect others to give a damn about you.
So, to me, I would have to say, SUIT UP!
