Apple the Awesome, again!

The first Apple product that I own is an iPod Nano 1st generation which I have purchased from a store in Hong Kong back in 2005. I remember vividly about how excited I have been after my purchase though I do have to pay a relatively high price for a nano back then (and for some reason it was cheaper in Hong Kong). My iPod Nano has been my loyal travel companion for a good 3 to 4 year. There has been no problems all these years and the experience of using it has been absolutely wonderful.

In November of last year, I received an email from Apple denoting that there has been a problem with the battery of  the iPod Nano 1st generation, and the one that I own may be in the list of impacted units! Apple announced that they will be doing a worldwide recall on all the affected units and a replacement program is set in place. At first, I thought it was a fraud. So I went online and did a google search on this replacement program and realized that it is true!

In Malaysia, in order to get a replaced unit, you would have to go through the official re-seller. In Penang, it would be Switch. I had to bring my unit down to Switch for them to examine if my unit is an impacted unit. At that point, I was still a little reluctant about replacing my iPod, simply because it has been one with me for so long! 6 years! And, I like the rotating scroll piece thing (I don’t know what you call them). I still think it’s cool! But on the other hand, if my unit has battery problems, I don’t wish for the iPod to explode in my face. After confirming that my iPod is one of the impacted units, for safety purposes, I decided to go ahead with the replacement program.

It is said in many forums that Apple would be replacing the units with another 1st generation unit. Some people were complaining about getting a new old model, but to me it’s fine. I was a bit uncomfortable at first about possibly getting a refurbished unit, but I thought to myself, better a good unit than a bad one which could blow up in your face.

Now, at this point, I was amazed with Apple’s after sales service. For a product that has been around for 7 years and has obsolete probably 5 years ago, I am surprised that Apple is still willing to do a 1 to 1 replacement. Although some people said this is a norm and that companies should indeed give a replacement, but I don’t think that necessarily holds true for many companies.

I was told that I have to wait for a good 4 to 6 weeks before the replacement unit arrives. The unit arrived a little late, and on the Friday before the Chinese New Year week, I received a phone call from the Switch service center to inform me that my iPod Nano has arrived. And it came with a pleasant surprise. It was not a 1st generation iPod Nano, but we have all been replaced with a 6th generation iPod Nano. Yes, you hear me. It was the latest model. I’ve known of this news through forums that they were replacing with the latest model, but it wasn’t until I see it that I truly believe that this was happening! Although I still prefer the design on the 1st generation Nano, this new one works just fine for me. I am not going to complain. :)

It is interesting how Apple is quick to change something which was going to look bad on them, having to have the problems with the battery, into a pleasant after sales service experience for their users. As I’ve said in my previous blog post about the experience I have had with Apple on my swollen battery, I would dare say that without a doubt, I would continue to purchase products from Apple. Based on the experiences that I have had, I strongly feel that Apple is here to provide all the necessary services to ensure that my experience of using their product is nothing but pleasant and safe.

For now, Apple, I shall be loyal to you. ;)

Apple the Awesome

I’ve always been an Apple fan. Not as crazy as those fanboys, but enough to say that I love Apple. The experience I had today just put my love for Apple up a notch. I think they even made me wanna buy something out of the store!!

The battery of my MacBook has swollen to a state where it is not usable anymore. I was even afraid that it may explode one day! Hence, I had to use my MacBook like a normal PC, without my battery. I went to the local Apple resellers in Penang to ask if a replacement is possible. The answer is no, simply because the warranty period is over and there’s really nothing that I can do about it except to purchase a new battery, which by the way cost a whopping RM560 (or something like that).

I didn’t want to spend that much money on the battery since my MacBook is going into its 4th year. What’s the point right?

When I came to the US, I brought my MacBook along, with the swollen battery. I went to the Apple Store at Washington Square hoping to get the battery at a cheaper rate. As I entered, there were tons of staffs around, assisting the overwhelming amount of customers in the store. One of the staff came up to me and say, “How may I assist you today?”. I showed him that my battery is all swell up and ask if it was going to explode. He said “Oh! It might just explode. Let me get you to the Genius Bar and have someone assist you with this problem.”. This other guy then took my name and asked me to wait for 5 mins and someone will attend to my problem.

True enough, in approximately 5 mins, a guy name Brad from the Genius Bar came up to me and asked me to go to the counter to talk about my problem. I showed him my swollen battery and in just 5 mins, he replaced the battery for me with a brand new one. I asked him how much did it cost, and he told me that it was a replacement at no cost. You hear me, NO COST. FREE. He didn’t even asked me any questions at all. I was so dumbfounded, I couldn’t move and stood at the Genius Bar and said WOW a couple of times before I left. :) And I couldn’t stop smiling. I was so happy.

The experience at the Apple Store was absolutely amazing. It was total awesomeness. It was an experience that cannot be expressed fully in words. Apple made me feel happy making a purchase of their product. Apple made me feel my purchase with them is an absolute right and worthwhile purchase. And most importantly, Apple made me want to go back and continue buying their products after mine can no longer function. Best after sales service EVER EXPERIENCED.

It was awesome. Awesome. AWESOME. Totally.

I love you Apple, more than before. ;)

my favorite bookstore

I use to get all my books from the bookstore available in Malaysia; MPH, Popular, Borders, Kinokuniya, Times. It is good to get books locally coz you get to start reading almost instantly. No waiting needed. But the thing about the local bookstores is the fact that they don’t usually take in a lot of books. Not the latest books at least. One has to wait for some time before certain books travel into Malaysia. You can place an order through the bookstore, but they will usually put additional surcharge on top of the price of the book, and you have to wait approximately 6 weeks.

And then come one beautiful morning last year when Linda told me about this brilliant bookstore. Online. With free international shipping.

Introducing — BookDepository.com

I was skeptical at first, knowing that buying things from other countries online would usually mean a significant amount of money needed to pay for shipping. Though it is stated free international shipping on their website, I was afraid that there may just be catch!

After my first purchase last year, I’ve fallen madly in love with this bookstore. All the books you can imagine can be purchased from this online store, even moleskine notebooks!! They are absolutely awesome, coz the price of the books are cheaper than the books sold in the local stores here in Malaysia, there is no additional charges for shipping nor is there any tax imposed, the books usually arrive in approximately 2 – 3 weeks upon purchase, books can be pre-ordered even before it is published at a really low price, they throw in a free bookmark everytime you buy a book and they give out discounts every now and then!

This bookstore definitely spells Awesome with a capital A. Make that a capital A.W.E.S.O.M.E. Love it. Will I be buying more books from BookDepository? You bet. Why not give this store a try.

a mini *woot*

:)

Never would I have thought THIS would happen to me but one of my Hollywood photo was actually picked to be featured in the 16th Edition of the Schmap Los Angeles Online Travel Guide. *woot*

I’m no professional photographer and I’m nowhere near being a professional. So to have someone recognize a photo I took is truly an honor. Although it is not for any big time mag, I still think this deserves a mini *woot*. hehe.

p/s: Here in China for 2 weeks. Flight was TORTUROUS. One of my flights delayed for 2 freaking hours. I lost count of the number of times I got sick. If only I can tele-port. As usual, Facebook, Twitter is not available. Well, thank god for VPN.

arriba bebot!

Thanks to a particular someone, I am now superbly addicted to this song; Feliz Navidad. Especially this version by North Point’s iBand. The song arrangement was superb and it was absolutely entertaining just to watch them perform. Brilliant work.

I have to know the apps that were used in this video, especially that singing robot (too cute!). After much googling, we finally found it. Reid Greven, the Associate Music Director of the band keeps a blog and he wrote a post, listing out the apps that were used. How exciting! I immediately download the Bebot app and started to play with it. I was definitely super excited.

And here’s what I believe would be the settings for Bebot to sing Feliz Navidad. :)

Double tap the little arrow located at the bottom right of the screen.

start

Make the necessary settings as follow; super simple. ;)

The preset is set as Bebot. Next, tap on scale and ensure that the scale is set at C major. After that’s set, tap on scale settings and zoom in a little so that the grids can cover up to E (at least 3 strings after the top yellow line). Tap on the string to check the range. If it’s too low, just tap on the ‘+’ sign on the far left of the screen. You should be on the right note range with just one tap. Tap on back/close to close the setting page.

bebot settings

Now you’re ready to make your Bebot sing!

sing

Wheeeee! I’m not sure if there are any other hidden settings that I am not aware of, but I think with this setting, one will be able to play Feliz Navidad like the Bebot player in the video. Let me know if I missed out any important settings.

Again, hats off to the people in the North Point iBand. Absolutely awesome. *salute* ;)
